The Activated Man
Released
The Activated Man is a psychological horror built on grief, tension, and visual edge.
Shot over an intense 15-day schedule, every scene was captured with two cameras, often rolling on medium wides and close-ups simultaneously. That pace required a lighting strategy built for coverage without compromising the results. Rather than lighting for a single frame, we designed environments that could sustain multiple angles at once, allowing performances to move freely while maintaining tonal consistency.
The director had a precise vision from the start, which streamlined decision-making and allowed me to focus fully on execution. With limited time to finesse setups, the lighting had to be bold, intentional, and decisive.
I wanted the film to carry a harder edge, something reminiscent of 90’s thrillers and classic studio horror. To achieve that, I shot the entire film at 4500K in-camera. This created a natural visual separation: interior scenes retained warmth and density, while exterior sequences shifted into a cooler, steel-toned palette. That single decision unified the film’s look without relying heavily on post manipulation.
We leaned into motivated lighting, shadow play, and classic horror camera techniques; using high contrast and in-camera effects to create unease. It was a fast-moving production, but the visual identity remained controlled and deliberate.
The Activated Man was shot in 2023.
